USA TodayAsk a question...share the response. The USA TODAY voices project is simply a modern way to capture and share your thoughts on an important question. USA TODAY video journalists ask a question in cities and at events across America and use the video to get the conversation started. Each video lives on a page that allows you to comment, Tweet or record a response of your own. So, browse through the questions we have asked, or suggest your own. If you find one you're passionate about, share your voice with the rest of the USA...today. More…
Powhiri: New Zealand's Welcoming Spirit
NewZealand.comPowhiri: New Zealand's Welcoming Spirit was commissioned by Tourism New Zealand in partnership with the Discovery Channel to coincide with the screening of television documentaries about New Zealand. Designed primarily for overseas visitors, this online documentary feature uses a narrated slideshow story-telling format to provide visitors with insights and information that will prepare them for their first powhiri, the native Maori traditional welcome ceremony. To ensure the online powhiri experience was authentic and based on protocols from a particular tribal region, Shift worked with a cultural consultant and staff from the Waitangi National Trust. Recorded interviews with local people are a special highlight, each person providing further explanation about the importance of traditional customs to their personal lives and in interactions with the many tourists who visit their region every year. "All our traditions aren't just to be pulled out for ceremonial occasions. They're alive and living within our culture", says Taane Thomas, a Nga Puhi elder. Throughout the site, visitors can click on Related Topics including waka, origins and early migration, Maori visual and performing arts, tribal meeting places and traditional health practices. Within these topics there are links to independent tourism operators registered on travel.newzealand.com which enable visitors to discover the range of cultural experiences provided throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
