Francis Gardler is a graduate student at Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. Prior to returning to school to receive his masters degree, Francis was the photojournalist-in-residence at Western Kentucky University for two years. As a staff photographer at Patuxent Publishing Company (which produces 15 award-winning weekly newspapers in the Baltimore/ Washington corridor), he was a four-time winner of the NPPA Region 3 Still Photographer of the Year award for his work in 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The Howard County Times, one of the weekly newspapers, received first place in the 2004 NPPA's Best of Photojournalism contest for Best Use of Photography for Newspapers with less than 75,000 circulation. A 1994 graduate of Western Kentucky University's photojournalism program, Gardler joined Patuxent Publishing Company in 1996 after working at the The News-Gazette in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. While at Western Kentucky University he did internships at The Los Angeles Times, Patuxent Publishing Company, The Syracuse (NY) Newspapers, The Flint (Mich.) Journal and the Jackson (Mich.) Citizen-Patriot. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he also received first place in the Sports Portfolio/General Division at the Sixty-First Annual Pictures of the Year International Competition for a portfolio made up of pictures of local high school and amateur athletic events taken within a twenty-five mile radius of the company's home office in Columbia, Maryland.
